Whether you are creating a presentation to bring data back to your team or want to know how to film yourself while presenting a PowerPoint, recording your presentation has many benefits. You can record a presentation in real time as you present it, or do it in advance to take advantage of the inverted template or make your presentation available on demand. While there are several ways to record a presentation, I am going to give you my favorite way to record a high quality PowerPoint presentation with audio and video.
How to record your screen with Microsoft PowerPoint
To create a PowerPoint screen recording, open a new or existing presentation, and then do the following:
- Go to the Insert tab and click Screen Recording.
- In the dock that appears, click Select Area or use the Windows Key + Shift + A keyboard shortcut.
- Using the cross-shaped tool that appears, click and drag to select the part of the screen you want to record.
- By default, audio and mouse pointer are recorded. If you don’t want to save them, click the dock buttons to turn them off.
- Click the Record button or use the Windows Key + Shift + R keyboard shortcut to start recording. You can also use this shortcut to pause and resume recording. You can switch to another program or window and PowerPoint will continue recording.
- Once the recording is complete, move the mouse pointer to where the dock was and it will reappear. Click the Stop button or use the Windows Key + Shift + Q keyboard shortcut to end recording. (If you want to repair the base while recording, click the pin icon in the lower right corner.)
- To save the recording to your computer, right-click on the still image of the video and select Save Media As.
- In the dialog that opens, you can choose the name and location of the file and click Save.
How to take a screenshot with Microsoft PowerPoint
You can also use PowerPoint to take screenshots. What’s especially handy about using PowerPoint to take screenshots is that you can easily select any of your open windows to capture, with the click of a button.
- Create a new presentation and go to Insert> Screenshot.
- You will see a grid of all open windows on your computer except minimized windows.
- Click on the window you want to take a screenshot of. If you prefer to select an area on the screen, click Screenshot. This will minimize PowerPoint allowing you to click and drag to take a screenshot of anything directly behind the PowerPoint window.
- The screenshot will appear in PowerPoint. To save it to your computer, right click on the image and select Save as Image.
- In the dialog that opens, you can choose the name, file format (for example, JPG, PNG, PDF, GIF, BMP) and location of the file.
